A University of Toronto graduate was close to the action as Canadian women’s basketball made its professional debut this year – and she credits Hart House for showing her the steps to get there.

Justine Coroza, who graduated from Trinity College on June 10, is a member of The Rhythm Section, the Toronto Tempo’s dance ensemble.

Coroza found her footing as a work study student in Hart House’s Hip-Hop Education program, which she credits with giving her the skills and supportive community to pursue dance professionally.

“I wouldn't be as dedicated and confident a dancer if it weren't for Hart House believing in me,” says Coroza, who majored in critical studies in equity and solidarity in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

She first discovered the program through its Lyricist Lounge events, where artists gather to share work and connect with producers and musicians.

Over three years, she was given a stage to hone her talent and build community, including performing and leading workshops at the annual Hip-Hop Block Party.

“Hip-hop culture is often overlooked. But it’s so diverse and it brings people together,” Coroza says.  “That’s why this program is so important. It brings community together, and I think that's what's at the core of Hart House.”
