Paul Santerre elected to the U.S. National Academy of Inventors

Paul Santerre, a professor at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and the Faculty of Dentistry, has been elected a fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Inventors (NAI), which honours academic inventors who have successfully translated their research into commercial technologies that benefit society.

Santerre holds 79 patents in medical polymers and drug delivery and serves as the Baxter Chair for Health Technology and Commercialization at the University Health Network.

His research has led to five start-up ventures – most notably Interface Biologics Inc. (IBI), which he formed in 2001 to commercialize his Endexo technology, a surface-modifying compound that reduces blood clotting in medical devices and prevents deadly complications.

“Professor Santerre has made outstanding contributions to innovation in the biomaterials field through the invention and commercialization of new technologies and the mentoring of up-and-coming inventors and entrepreneurs,” said Christopher Yip, the dean of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.

“On behalf of the faculty, sincere congratulations to him on this well-deserved honour.”
