Luis Seco, a professor in the department of mathematics in the University of Toronto's Faculty of Arts & Science, has been awarded Spain's Orden de Isabel la Católica (Order of Isabella the Catholic).
The civil honour recognizes exceptional service to Spain and outstanding contributions to international co-operation.
Seco is director of the master of mathematical finance program in the department of economics and founding director of RiskLab, a research lab focused on quantitative finance and asset management. His work centres on sustainability and climate risk, applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to environmental scoring, CO2 emissions and carbon markets. He also serves as chair of the Centre for Sustainable Development at the Fields Institute and is an affiliate faculty member at the Vector Institute.
“When the country you live in and work in recognizes your contributions, the feeling is great. When a country you don’t live or work in recognizes your work, you realize the international impact your work has, and it gives you a tremendous sense of accomplishment," Seco said.
