Gwen Eadie recognized by Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies

Gwen Eadie, an assistant professor in the David A. Dunlap department of astronomy and astrophysics and the department of statistical sciences in the Faculty of Arts & Science, has received an Emerging Leader Award from the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS).

The award recognizes early-career statistical scientists who show evidence of, and potential for, leadership and who will help shape and strengthen the field.

Eadie was recognized for her contributions to the growing field of astrostatistics, which include: initiating impactful collaborations between statisticians and astrophysicists; developing statistical methods that have advanced understanding of fast radio bursts, globular clusters and the structure of the Milky Way; and exceptional mentorship and training of the next generation of researchers in this rapidly evolving field.

Eadie is the founder of Astrostat@UofT, an interdisciplinary group that brings together researchers and trainees across statistics and astronomy. Beyond U of T, she has served as chair of astrostatistics groups within the American Astronomical Society and the American Statistical Association.

"I really believe in encouragement, and I see myself as… a little bit of a coach," Eadie said.
