Eugenia Kumacheva receives E.W.R. Steacie Award

Eugenia Kumacheva, a University Professor in the department of chemistry in U of T's Faculty of Arts & Science, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 E.W.R. Steacie Award.

The award is presented by the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) – a national not-for-profit organization that supports and celebrates chemical sciences and engineering – to honour exceptional contributions to chemical research in Canada.

Kumacheva was recognized for her pioneering work in soft matter, spanning the fundamental chemistry and physics of polymers, gels, colloids and related systems, and for her leadership in microfluidics, 3D printing and machine-learning-enabled discovery. Her research has enabled advances in materials design, medical collaboration and translational science.

“Over the past six-seven years, I initiated collaborations with three hospitals," said Kumacheva. "Through these collaborations, I was excited to see that fundamental natural science research can have impact on medical care of cancer, osteoarthritis, and chronic wounds.”

Mitchell Winnik, University Professor in the department of chemistry, applauded the CIC’s choice, noting Kumacheva's “groundbreaking contributions to microfluidics” and describing her as “a gifted mentor.”
