Christy Anderson receives National Humanities Center Fellowship
Published: February 9, 2026
Christy Anderson, a professor in the department of art history in the University of Toronto's Faculty of Arts & Science, has received a 2025-26 National Humanities Center Fellowship.
The fellowship recognizes outstanding humanities scholars by providing sustained time, resources and an international scholarly community at the National Humanities Center in Durham, N.C., to support major research and writing projects.
Anderson, who is cross-appointed to the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, was selected for her work as an architectural historian examining how architectural knowledge moves across cultures, materials and environments. During the fellowship, she is advancing her book project Castles of the Sea, which explores ships and related structures as overlooked forms of architecture that shaped global trade, cultural exchange and geopolitics between Europe and North America from 1500 to 1650.
“It’s absolutely fantastic,” Anderson said. “It’s an independently funded centre with no government ties, and the opportunity to spend sustained time thinking, writing and talking with other humanities scholars is incredibly valuable.”
Anderson added that the environment is a refreshing reminder of the significance and importance of the humanities. “We're in this climate where the humanities sometimes feel like they have to justify themselves. But here, there's no question about the importance of the humanities."
