Aziza Chaouni, an associate professor of architecture in U of T's John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, has been recognized with a Social Engagement award by Dutch foundation Ammodo.
Ammodo supports socially and ecologically responsible architecture worldwide through grants that advance projects and promote knowledge exchange in ethical and sustainable practice.
Located in Talat N’Yaaqoub, Morocco, the "Prototype Anti-Seismic House" was recognized for its "humble yet powerful architectural response to crisis, addressing the urgent housing challenges of a seismic region."
Developed after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake destroyed thousands of traditional homes, the project was developed via community participation and education, with a focus on safety, sustainability and respect for local identity.
The project was supported by undergraduate research assistants Shirin Al Asmi, Aya Bakaraki, Michaela Tsvetkova, Yasaman Pazoki Toroudi and Isha Sharma.
