U of T student team wins Institution of Transport Engineers (ITE) Sandbox Competition

The University of Toronto’s Institute of Transport Engineers (UT-ITE) student chapter, comprising undergraduate students from the department of civil and mineral engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, has won first place at ITE's 2026 Sandbox Competition.
The transportation planning and design challenge, hosted by ITE and ITE Great Lakes District in Detroit, invited student teams from across North America to develop solutions to transportation planning challenges pertaining to the theme of people-centred mobility.
The UT-ITE team was the first Canadian student team to appear as a finalist in the history of the competition.
The seven team members are: Kaiy Cao, Ian Cassidy, Lucas Gaspari, Michael Hollander, Sean Leung, Thanusan Ragulan and Owen Zhang.
