Jennifer Howell recognized with Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM

Jennifer Howell, an alum of the department of chemistry in U of T's Faculty of Arts & Science, has received a 2025 Certificate of Excellence as part of the Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence in STEM.

Presented by the Government of Canada, the awards honour elementary and secondary school teachers who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in education and commitment to preparing students for success in a digital and innovation-driven world.

Howell, who completed her master of science in chemistry at U of T in 2011, was recognized for her innovative and inclusive approach to teaching science to students in Grades 8 to 12 at Elmwood School in Ottawa. At Elmwood, an all-girls International Baccalaureate continuum school, she integrates hands-on learning, Universal Design for Learning strategies and initiatives like her Women in STEM learning series to inspire confidence, curiosity and leadership in science.

“Being honoured with this award feels like a full-circle moment,” said Howell. “It has helped me reflect on the next chapter of my career, where I can give back and mentor the next generation of teachers.”

“Jenny not only teaches chemistry; she fosters a love for learning, a curiosity about science, and the confidence for students – particularly girls – to envision themselves as future leaders in scientific fields,” said Katie Fraser, director of student success at Elmwood School.
