Daniel Drucker named 2026 Citation Laureate by Clarivate

Daniel Drucker, a senior investigator at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, Sinai Health and University Professor of medicine in the University of Toronto's Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been named a 2026 Citation Laureate by U.K.-based analytics company Clarivate.

The annual list honours 22 researchers for carrying out highly cited work, regarded Nobel class, that is shaping science and society.

Drucker, along with Jens Juul Holst of the University of Copenhagen and Svetlana Mojsov of Rockefeller University, was recognized in the category of physiology or medicine "for identification and characterization of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and studies of its biological activity." 

“Daniel Drucker's research has paved the way for therapies that are changing the lives of millions of people living with diabetes and obesity," said Leah Cowen, U of T's vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. "On behalf of the University of Toronto, I would like to congratulate Professor Drucker on his recognition as a Citation Laureate – a distinction that reflects the influence of his work on human health and scientific discovery."

“Dr. Drucker's career exemplifies how curiosity-driven discovery science, pursued over decades, can fundamentally change medicine and improve millions of lives," said Anne-Claude Gingras, vice-president of research at Sinai Health and director of the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute.

Drucker becomes the eighth U of T researcher to be named a Citation Laureate, joining John Dick, Stephen Scherer, Sajeev John, Anthony Pawson, James Till and Ernest McCulloch. He previously featured in Clarivate's annual Highly Cited Researchers list, which recognizes researchers who author papers ranked in the top one per cent by citations in their field, every year between 2018 and 2025.

"It is an honour to be recognized as a Citation Laureate," said Drucker, who holds the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre-Novo Nordisk Chair in Incretin Biology at U of T, in a press release. "The story of GLP-1 medicines demonstrates the power of curiosity-driven research. What began as a quest to understand how gut hormones regulate metabolism has led to therapies that are improving the lives of millions of people worldwide. It is a reminder that fundamental science can have impacts far beyond what researchers initially imagine."
